About
Our Mission
Through co-living experimentation and hard-earned experience, people have developed new ways of living together and unearthed old ones. However, much of that information is contained within small networks and is not broadly discoverable or accessible.
We aim to change that, and have created this conference to bring together community members from different walks of life to consolidate our collective wisdom into shareable resources that can be distributed and built upon throughout the world. We bring together seasoned practitioners, subject-matter experts, and curious newcomers for a day of discussions, workshops, talks, panels, storytelling, writing, art, and organic connections.
The intention is to connect like-minded folks, share both practical skills/learnings and inspiring ideas/visions, and plant the seeds of collaboration to co-create an inclusive, accessible, and caring housing future. We will examine our past, contend with our present, and envision our future.

History
At Queer Summer Camp in the woods of Northern WA, the seed of an idea to gather community-minded humans in one place for nourishing connection and inspiring conversations took root. We initially planned to do a relaxing retreat in nature or a more casual evening of talks. But soon our ambitions grew to a full-day multi-track conference for 2023 and expanded further to a two-day conference in 2024.
Modern Family Institute
Our vision is to redefine family by its function, not its form, creating a world where everyone has access to a robust community of care: a group of people who care for one another, celebrate life's milestones, make meaning together, and share resources.
Our mission is to create the social and physical conditions for communities of care to flourish, leveraging research to design narratives, policies, and infrastructure that make it easy for people to care for one another.
How we get there:
Illuminate the many ways that families form and thrive
Advocate for the legal protection & social inclusion of diverse family structures
Design infrastructure that better supports community-centered care
District Commons
District commons is an invisible support structure for a variety of experimental commons, radical solidarity, & autonomous spaces across the globe. The fate of our generation is in our own hands.
Some of our projects include: The Second Life Project, The Radical Reading Room, The Alternative Justices Project, Revolving Loan Fund, and The Accidental Megastructure.
We believe:
Communities are experts on themselves
Experimentation is vital for creating change
Immersive experiences lead to deeper learning
Equitably sharing and building resources supports liberation
Our Organizers
The Community Living Wisdom Exchange is produced by an all-volunteer team, both leading up to the event and on the day-of. Below are some of the caring and skillful people that help make the event happen.
