Housing & Finance for Modern Families

Building better infrastructure for diverse families

Our Housing and Finance for Modern Families project addresses a fundamental the lack of accessible, affordable, and inclusive housing for diverse family structures. Current housing supply and policy overwhelmingly support nuclear families (only 18% of US households), and few banks offer simply ways for multiple adults to seek joint financing. We seek to realign housing policy, design, and financing models with the needs of multi-adult, solo parents, and intergenerational families in mind, fostering stronger communities of collective care.

Project Goals

Our project’s overarching goal is to make cooperative housing and multi-adult family living models more accessible, better understood, and widely adopted. The project focuses on three key objectives:

Interdisciplinary Research & Conferences

We organize events that bring together grassroots housing organizations, real estate developers, architects, and researchers to innovate housing solutions, including the “Beyond Yimbyism” conference in March 2025 and the second annual “Community Living Wisdom Exchange” in December 2024.

Research Creation & Advocacy

We design and distribute informational resources such as cooperative financing models, architectural designs, and advocacy tools. Funding will help us engage with additional technical experts and disseminate these resources more widely to policymakers and our constituents.

Storytelling & Public Education

We produce media campaigns, articles, and infographics that highlight diverse co-living models and multi-adult family structures. These materials will normalize alternative housing arrangements and inspire policy change.
