Financial And Legal

As homeownership continues to become less affordable every year, first-time buyers are creating alternative pathways to realize their dream of homeownership. One of the most popular over the past 5 years is co-buying with friends or family. We’ll show you everything you need to know to see if it makes sense for you to consider.
-
Tuttle Law Group Managing Partner Therese Tuttle and attorney Paola Eisner will review entity structure and tax election choices for cohousing groups who plan to purchase property together. Groups that review these choices together will be better prepared to move forward.
-
Come get involved in the Sustainable Economies Law Center's effort to change San Francisco's definitions of Dwelling Unit, Family, and Group Housing Unit and our more ambitious push to tear down barriers through the California Housing Choice for All Ac
Mission and Governance
-
Hear from 3 different communities on how they came together, how they operate, and lessons to integrate into your own village dreams.
-
Many of us have experienced how transformative it is to live with and near friends. We've also probably experienced judgement from others who are challenged by the way we have chosen to live. We might face difficulty trying to recruit new people who aren't convinced that living with friends will work for them. And we face real barriers from lenders and landlords who are loathe to accommodate this 'alternative' lifestyle. Come hear from Tyler Alderman of Fractal (NYC), Daniel Kronovet of Sage House (Los Angeles), and Morgane Oléron of Selgars (Devon, UK) how they have navigated telling their story to the 'default' world and brainstorm strategies for sharing your community.

Organizational Systems
-
Food tastes better when it’s shared, not just with housemates, but with that other cool co-op down the street. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll share how five communal houses set up an easy, affordable system for buying bulk produce and help you get started forming your own group.
-
People often bring implicit expectations to community living, which can become sources of tension. In conversation with participants, we will explore three of these: expectations around technology, expectations around discomfort, and expectations around affordability. The workshop goal is for participants to come away with a better understanding of various views on these topics, and be better equipped to navigate these questions in the future.
-
A guided workshop on determining what you’re really looking for and create a strong process for finding folks who are a great fit for your community home.
Family Structure
-
The Village is a multigenerational community house in SF overlooking the Panhandle Park. We are a joyous, vibrant community of adults, kids, and families (currently 15 adults and 4 children ages 5-7)! We have 18 bedrooms, 3 kitchens + 9 bathrooms, divided among 3 flats. We believe that we weren’t meant to live–either as adults or as kids–in isolation. They say that “it takes a village” to raise a child, and we believe that life is sweeter when enjoyed together. We share the joys of living and raising the next generation together.
-
-
In this short workshop, you'll learn how to build your village and create a shared childcare plan — complete with models for sharing care, how to find your people, how to ask them to participate, and a printable plan for bringing your circle to life!
-
Learn how a group of friends in San Francisco naturally evolved into an intentional community across multiple buildings.
Social/Emotional Learning
-
Unaddressed emotional reactivity erodes communities. How can your community use moments of reactivity as a doorway for creating more intimacy, growth, and connection, and let the reactivity be heard without letting it creating excess emotional burden?
-
From routine meetings and decision making, to high-stakes conflict management, to strategic planning - having a Facilitator can make things easier. In this workshop, we explore what facilitation is, what it is not, and share tips and tactics to grow your skillset as a Facilitator. Participants are encouraged to bring in real-life experiences to solve, and will walk away with additional resources to hone their skills and stock their toolboxes.
-
Use structured activities around movement, song, playfulness, or even stillness to evoke different ideas or perspectives and use your body as a way to access information that might be harder to find than just talking, in service of creating positive culture and community.
Justice and Politics
-
Learn how our different life experiences shape the way we move through the world—and how understanding them can bring us closer together.
-
Learn from two fabulous queer attorneys on unique legal considerations for polyamorous, blended, and/or LGBTQ+ families when family & estate planning.
